  Empirical or critical Communication research?

Titel: Empirical or critical Communication research?
Auteur: Wigston, David
Verschenen in: Communicatio
Paginering: Jaargang 14 (1988) nr. 1 pagina's 32-47
Jaar: 1988
Inhoud: This article reviews, in the form of a literature survey, the two dominant approaches to communications research: Empirical communication research, which originated in the U.S.A., has a quantitative, objective and functional approach. Research concentrates on the possibilities of the media and media effects. The Critical School has a much wider scope than the Empirical School. It is holistic, qualitative and subjective. To the critical researcher it is vital to include a theory of society and the media is seen as a means of maintaining the status quo. Both the approaches have been formed by the political/social/cultural environment in which they evolved. The main criticism against the empirical approach is that it is inadequately equipped to deal with the deeper and more important issues arising out of communication. The article concludes with a brief look at the South African scene which provides an ideal situation for producting a hybrid variant of both schools.
