  Pornografie, erotiek en sensuur

Title: Pornografie, erotiek en sensuur
Author: Bruwer, Johan
Appeared in: Communicatio
Paging: Volume 11 (1985) nr. 2 pages 3-22
Year: 1985
Contents: In the style of an essay the writer of this article provides various provocative and at times questionable arguments on the difference between pornography and eroticism. He concludes that the fundamental difference between “pornography” and “erotic art” is that “pornography” has to be secretly used by the individual. He is not in a position to communicate his experience thereof openly to society, because it fails to verify society's sexual mythology. It comprises rather a candid search for the sense of his own sexual gratification and is consequently an interrogation of society's sexual mythology. “Erotic art” is the confirmation of the community's enjoyment of sensuality by society as a group. The emphasis is less on the physical sexuality of man's body than on the meaningful relativity of that sexuality to man's whole existence. Eroticism gives meaning; pornography asks for it.
