Reflections on Japanese Writing and Built Form

Titel: Reflections on Japanese Writing and Built Form
Auteur: Shelton, Barrie
Verschenen in: Architectural theory review
Paginering: Jaargang 9 (2004) nr. 1 pagina's 82-96
Jaar: 2004-04
Inhoud: Most work on writing has been by linguists who have viewed it essentially as an expression of the spoken word. There are. however, other dimensions that deserve attention. For instance, each writing system has its own graphic space and other visual characteristics: types of markings, spatial arrangements, directions of flow, geometries, etc. Japanese writing is unique and very different from that of the Western alphabet. Individual characters (kanji) bear meaning: each is composed against a background of the square: kanji have pictographic and ideographic origins, compound characters are a form of montage; etc. These and other characteristics may have influence beyond the written page and contribute to ways of thinking about space and form—not least to the design and organisation of buildings and cities.
