Title: Outside in: The forgotten model of the European square
Author: Webber, Peter
Appeared in: Architectural theory review
Paging: Volume 13 (2008) nr. 1 pages 52-68
Year: 2008-04
Contents: The extensive literature on the form, nature and genesis of the European square has tended to concentrate strongly on a limited range of types, although classifying them in a variety of combinations. For the purpose of this paper they are simplified to the two predominant archetypes, the quintessential tightly-contained medieval space epitomized by the Italian piazza, and the centrally focused square of the Renaissance and later. The paper then argues for recognition of another group, somewhat neglected, at least in the English-language literature, in which the symbolic structures are located in the centre, rather than at the perimeter of the square. A selection of these is described and conclusions drawn about the value of acknowledging them as a distinctive typological group.
