The multielement composition of the conodont genus Apatognathus Branson & Mehl 1934 consists of 7 element types (M, Sa, Sc, Sb, Sd, Pa and Pb). Four taxa of Apatognathus are recognized from the Famennian part of the Late Devonian reef complex of the Canning Basin, Western Australia. A. varians varians Branson & Mehl forms the model for the Apatognathus apparatus. A. varians klapperi Druce, A. provarians sp. nov., and A. sp. nov. A. are recognized as partial apparatuses with 5, 3 and 2 element types respectively. The genus Apatognathus is restricted to the Late Devonian, and 'apatognathids' of Carboniferous age should be assigned to a new genus.
