Nine species of Neonesidea and Bairdoppilata have been identified from various late Early to early Middle Miocene lithologies within the Port Phillip and Western Port Basins. Their prolific occurrence in these strata is attributed to the known warm water conditions that prevailed at this time. Two species, Neonesidea australis and Neonesidea chapmani, have previously been described. Three others, Neonesidea whatleyi, Neonesidea fredericki and Bairdoppilata fyansfordensis, are described as new. Four further species, three referable to Neonesidea and one to Bairdoppilata, are included in the text and figured, but left in open nomenclature. Rare specimens of both Bairdoppilata species exhibit reduced development of auxiliary dentition. This is correlated with other intraspecific morphological variations. These variations are gradational and therefore are interpreted as being mainly of an ecophenotypic nature. There is a shift from a high species abundance and diversity in the late Early to early Middle Miocene limestones, marls and clays of the Fyansford Formation to a low abundance and diversity in the sandy 'eastern facies' of the Sherwood Formation. This reduction is attributed to a combination of locally unfavourable depth-related conditions and a marginally cooler climatic regime. The latter possibly indicates a slightly younger age for the upper sequences of the 'eastern facies' of the Sherwood Formation (late Middle or early Late Miocene) correlating with the known post-early Middle Miocene cooling in southeastern Australia.
