Contents: The modified moment method is applied to study irreversible phenomena in dilute polar gases subject to an external electric field. A suitably generalized Boltzmann equation is employed. Extended Gibbs relations are obtained for such systems and Debye's dielectric relaxation equation is derived therefrom in a linear approximation. The extended Gibbs relation reduces to the equilibrium Gibbs relation obtained by the Groot and Mazur for polarizable systems. The present study thus provides a molecular theory of irreversible thermodynamics of dilute polar gases in an electric field.
