This article examines Diane Kurys's Entre Nous (1983) and Chantai Akerman's Les Rendez-vous d'Anna (1978) and Window Shopping (1986). Born after the war years, both filmmakers use an autobiographical persona who 'remembers' the war through the memories of a parental generation, particularly through the mother. In both films, history is inscribed, firstly, in relationships that are represented as the consequence of catastrophe; secondly, in persistent themes and motifs heavy with historical significance; and thirdly, in the very structure of the filmic narration. Akerman is the more experimental of the two directors and constructs a postwar trans-European identity. Yet both use female bonding and lesbianism to help clarify how the war is remembered. |
