Mastery or slavery: the ethics of revolt in Camus's 'Les Muets'

Titel: Mastery or slavery: the ethics of revolt in Camus's 'Les Muets'
Auteur: Capstick, Jill
Verschenen in: Modern & contemporary France
Paginering: Jaargang 11 (2003) nr. 4 pagina's 453-462
Jaar: 2003-11
Inhoud: Intervening in the history of interpretation surrounding Camus's most controversial essay, L'Homme revolte, this article probes Camus's notion of ethical revolt through an exploration of his narrative 'Les Muets'. Adopting the Beauvoirian concept of ethical failure, it offers a reading of Camus's short story as a fictionalisation of his theory of revolt and considers the extent to which his ethical position accommodates the inevitability of failure. The article argues that, rather than demonstrating the way in which authentic revolt opens up an alternative space of ethical encounter, Camus's representation of his pense%acute;e de midi in 'Les Muets' instead reveals the difficulty and debilitation involved in trying to maintain the tension between affirmation and negation. In drawing 'Les Muets' and L'Homme revolte into proximity, this reading traces the fictional contours of Camus's ethical approach, highlighting both its strengths and its limitations.
