This article, in reviewing of one the major policies of the Jospin government, lays emphasis on the relative ambiguities of the reforms and legislation put forward to reduce working time in France to a 35-hour week. The article examines the effects of the policy on the range of actors involved, including the unions and the employers, as well as situating it in the context of unemployment, one of the major issues to preoccupy the Frencch over the last few years. It is therefore not surprising that the working-time reforms came to occupy a central place in the presidential election campaign of spring 2002. |
