This article examines the portrayal and treatment of ageing in the contemporary French 'regional novel'. A contextualisation of three best-selling authors precedes an account of selected works. An initial consideration of their use of positive traditional stereotypes linked to old age leads to an examination of alternative valorising images, which stress transmissible life skills and the unquantifiable benefits of bonds between the elderly and the young. The article suggests that it is specifically the emphasis on the satisfaction and fulfilment each protagonist finds almost uniquely in his/her seventh or eighth decade that is significant in and characteristic of these novels. |
