This essay attempts to analyse the grander facets of Dual Containment Strategy pursued by the US. As a policy, it reflects American strategic thinking and patterns of behaviour over and beyond the regional focus on Iran and Iraq. Essentially it is a continuation of the Containment Strategy associated with the cold war and superpower rivalry. Much of its more recent manifestations can be understood in the light of its earlier goals and objectives. The main argument is that, despite the alleged regional orientation of the strategy, dual containment serves broader American interests at the global level. The hostility toward Iran and the sanctions against Iraq are stages in the American design of global containment, as its interests in the Middle East merge with others in Central Asia and in the Eurasian land mass. |
