The agri-foodstuff industry of the EU Mediterranean countries is defined by the orientations of the Common Agricultural Policy, by the GATT Agreement and by preferential agreements of the EU with the third countries. Through the CAP reform of 1992, direct income support to farmers replaced support for agricultural prices and discouragement of expansion was accompanied by greater attention to the revaluation of other functions of agricultural activity. The great liberalization of the Uruguay Round has affected many of the sub-sectors of Community agriculture including Mediterranean crops. The association agreements provide for better treatment for the agricultural products of third countries but also seek more competitive world markets. It is thus necessary to adopt common strategies to address the specific problems of the Mediterranean region in order to achieve better results. |
