Inhoud: A high-precision triangular element based on first-order thickness-stretch deformation theory is developed for the analysis of laminates under in-plane loading. The effect of thickness-stretch deformation on displacement variations and edge stresses in symmetric laminates under uniaxial extension is studied. The interlaminar edge stresses are obtained from thicknesswise integration of ply equilibrium equations. The higher-order derivatives of the displacements required for the estimation of interlaminar edge stresses, are evaluated by adapting a finite difference technique applied to the nodal strains and curvatures obtained from the finite element analysis. Typical numerical results for edge stresses in symmetric laminates under uniform extension have been obtained. The edge stresses predicted using the thickness-stretch deformation element are in reasonably good agreement with the quasi-three-dimensional and other results available in the literature. The thickness-stretch deformation theory for symmetric laminates under extension considered here does not include shear deformation. It is analogous to the classical theory of bending of symmetric laminates and appears to serve as a good first approximation for estimating interlaminar stresses in laminates under extension, except perhaps in local regions involving high stress gradients.
