An analytical approach combining the superposition and state-space techniques is developed for the title problem. The governing equations used herein are based on the first-order shear deformation theory of Yang et al., in which both shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects are included. For the purposes of illustrating the method, a laminated plate with two adjacent edges clamped and the others simply supported is analysed. Non-dimensional eigenvalues are presented for a wide range of plate properties and show the influence of the plate aspect ratio, length-to-thickness ratio, degree of anisotropy, and number of layers. This, to the author's knowledge, is the first comprehensive study of the general problem and the method is applicable to any plates with combinations of classical edge conditions, such as simply supported, clamped or free.
