Contents: The proper mechanical and electrical modelling of the various methods of piezoelectric material integration into smart structures requires special design oriented considerations. The accurate adaptation of the electric field quantities, i.e., the electric potential, the electric field strength, and the electric flux density, in the constitutive equations to the case of thin structures and unidirectional electrostatic fields is one concern of the paper. Some basic considerations show that the boundary conditions play a crucial role and decide in which way these field quantities should be modelled. Further considerations deal with the implementation of plane stress conditions. In the case of sandwich structures built by piezoelectric patches adhered to the surfaces of plates or shells the electric potential shows a quadratic distribution across the thickness. It will be shown that the more elaborate analysis compared to the mostly assumed linear distribution of the electric potential is worth the effort only in special cases.
