Inhoud: A local averaging procedure is proposed for determining effective properties of a reinforcement that has microstructure. This allows reduction in the number of microstructural scales. Composites that have hollow fibers were analyzed using finite elements to study the effect of homogenization of the hollow fiber. The results emphasize the importance of in situ modeling when determining the effective properties. The effect of different factors such as fiber shape, void fraction in the fiber, fiber wall stiffness and fiber fraction of the composite on the effective properties of the hollow fiber and the composite are studied. Three different shapes were considered—square, hexagonal and circular. The circular hollow fiber could be considered as an idealized single wall carbon nanotube and predicted properties were taken from the literature to mimic a carbon nanotube in a matrix.
