Previously derived upper and lower bounds on the probability of failure of a system of correlated elements in series have been formulated in terms of failure probabilities of individual elements and second-order probabilities of the joint failures of two elements. In this paper, improved bounds are derived by an extension of arguments used to derive second-order bounds and by introduction of third-order simultaneous failure probabilities. A numerical example of the improvement is given. A second-order improvement of the previously given second-order upper bound is obtained as a corollary |
