Inhoud: The poor reliability of plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings (TBC's) has led engine manufacturers to develop new processes to produce stronger and tougher coatings. In this study, electrophoretic deposition of a metal powder was used to obtain bond coats with a cellular structure. The TBC's were achieved by conventional air plasma spraying of partially stabilized zirconia. The cellular structure induced a pegging effect between the ceramic and the bond coating giving an improved thermal shock resistance. The lifetime was increased by a factor of six in comparison with that obtained for conventional TBC's. Thermomechanical effects became less important, due to the increased of lifetime. The behavior of the cellular electrophoretic coated TBC's was essentially controlled by diffusion and oxidation.
