Regression models for monthly mean sea level

Titel: Regression models for monthly mean sea level

Inhoud: A set of modes of monthly air pressure variation over the North Atlantic for the period 1950-1975 is obtained. Each monthly air pressure distribution can be precisely defined by a linear combination of these modes. Hence, the set of air pressure series can be replaced by a set of time varying coefficients, where each coefficient describes the contribution of a particular mode to a given air pressure distribution. A selection of the mode coefficients is then added to a multiple regression model, consisting of a trend and tidal terms, in an attempt to represent the effect of North Atlantic air pressure variations on monthly mean sea level at Newlyn (Great Britain) and Corunna (Spain). The effect of locally recorded air pressure at Newlyn is considered independently. It is found that although the models can account for about 90 percent of the observed mean sea level variance, there still remains a high correlation between the residuals, hence identifying a regional variation for further study.
