Brightness preference in Octopus as a function of the background brightness

Title: Brightness preference in Octopus as a function of the background brightness
Author: Bradley, E. A.
Messenger, J. B.
Appeared in: Marine & freshwater behaviour & physiology
Paging: Volume 4 (1977) nr. 4 pages 243-251
Year: 1977
Contents: When octopuses are allowed to make unrewarded attacks on either a black or a white rectangle shown together in front of a black or white screen they make a significantly higher number of attacks on the rectangle whose brightness contrasts with that of the background. This finding resolves conflicting evidence from previous work and establishes that octopuses do not exhibit a brightness preference per se. A subsidiary finding of this experiment has important practical implications : for optimum results white or very pale backgrounds should be avoided in visual discrimination experiments with Octopus.
