The history of squid fishery in Japanese waters is reviewed in terms of the catch, and the size and number of fishing vessels employed. The fishing gear and fishing methods used are described. The impact of incandescent and fluorescent lamps and reflectors (deployed above and below the water surface) to attract squid on the development of fishing methods is assessed. The effects of increased fishing activity on the size of squid schools is examined. |
