The problem considered is to characterize those integers d such that d = det(A)A an integral group matrix for an abelian group G of order n. It is shown that such integral group matrices exist for all d satisfying idn) = 1 if and only if G is cyclic. It is also shown that if a prime p divides (d. n) such that pt ‖ n and d = det(A) has solutions, then pt+l|d. This implies, for example that n can never occur as the determinant of an integral group matrix for an abelian group of order n, if n>1. |
