Every transformation M in the special linear group [image omitted] of an n-dimensional vector space over the quaternions [image omitted] is a product of reflections. The minimal number of reflections needed to express M is called the length of M. It will be denoted by l(M). We find that d= codim F(M) ≤l(M)≤codim F(M)+2, where F(M) is the subspace of vectors that are fixed under M. Every M has a normal formM=Jk1(λ1)⊕…⊕Jkr(λr), where the λr are complex numbers. For each M we determine l(M) in terms of the invariant [image omitted] is the conjugacy class of λi. |
