The need for mastery and control of one's environment has long been regarded as a basic human motivation. The psychological concepts of perception of control and reactance (a negative reaction to loss of control) have been studied by numerous scientists in varying contexts. Empirical evidence suggests that increased perceived control has positive impacts on psychological well-being, while loss or reduction of control may produce depreciative behaviours. A perceived leisure control/reactance theoretical framework is developed and applied to specific leisure phenomena such as social carrying capacity, satisfaction, site choice, displacement and depreciative behaviours. Implications for leisure planning and management are discussed. |
