Title: Specialized knowledge and the delivery of leisure services to the disabled
Author: Lewko, John H.
Appeared in: Leisure sciences
Paging: Volume 1 (1978) nr. 2 pages 131-146
Year: 1978
Contents: Based upon an earlier exploration of knowledge development in Therapeutic Recreation Service (TRS), this paper reexamines the progress that has been made in the area. Perusal of current literature in the field of TRS revealed an increase in research-oriented articles and greater involvement of therapeutic recreators as communicators. Although these findings were interpreted as positive signs of progress in knowledge development, there was still a need for greater precision in communication as well as increased intensity of fact-gathering. To facilitate future knowledge development, it was proposed that content areas for inquiry be more precisely defined. In this regard, the general area of socialization was identified as a major focus for the field, and five specific areas were delineated: parental influence; peer group; reaction of and/or toward the disabled; social learning and reinforcement; and achievement behavior. Suggestions made to improve the quality of communication include the use of case study methodology by practitioners.
