China's size and population make it an ideal setting for education by television, and this mainly descriptive article attempts to illustrate the work of the country's Central Radio and Television University (CRTVU), in which the writer worked for nine weeks in late 1988. The article describes the organisational structure of CRTVU and gives a brief case study of the work of the English Department in which the writer worked.
