Title: Ett bidrag till kannedomen om everdingens skandinaviska resa
Author: Held, Julius S.
Appeared in: Konsthistorisk tidskrift
Paging: Volume 6 (1937) nr. 1-4 pages 41-43
Year: 1937
Contents: New Facts about Everdingen's Scandinavian Journey by Julius S. Held. Very little is known about Allart van Everdingen's visit to the Scandinavian countries, a visit of very great importance to Jacob van Ruisdael and his school. Everdingen has obviously been in Sweden, where he painted a view of the factory of Julita not very far from Stockholm. The picture is now to be found in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam. Up till now nothing has been known about other places that Everdingen may have visited in Sweden. Fortunately, Mr. Julius Held, of America, has discovered a drawing signed by Everdingen and bearing the following inscription on its back: “molendael buyten gothenburgh na t'leven”. On a journey through Sweden last year Mr. Held easily identified “Molendael” as the small town “Molndal” near Gothenburg, still existing with its waterfalls, though modern manufactories have taken the place of the wooden cottages of the seventeenth century. The drawing is a most interesting specimen of Everdingen's sketches from his journey to Sweden nearly 300 years ago.
