The author presents a recently discovered picture of Gustavus II Adolphus painted by the Dutch battle painter, Jan Asselijn (1610-1652). As far as can be seen the representation is taken from the meeting at Stuhm during the Polish campaign in 1629. The King was temporarily taken prisoner by the Poles. A few moments afterwards however, he was rescued and escaped from the adventure none the worse. The same motive—although considerably more conventional—was painted by Jan Martsens de Jonge, a colleague of Asselijn's of the same period. Said painting belongs to the royal collections at Stockholm Castle. |
