In the Zorn Museum in Mora, Sweden, hangs a painting with the signature of Jacob Jordaens and dated 1640, illustrating the old saying, “The pitcher goes to the well until it cracks”. This painting has hitherto been regarded as a 19th century copy, and the author now wants to prove that it not only dates from the 17th century and must to a large extent have been painted by Jordaens himself, but also that it is identical with a famous painting by that master, which belonged to the Steengracht collection in the Hague before World War I. Our painting has been a part of Anders Zorn's collection since 1914 and was probably acquired by him shortly before that time; but whether he bought it at George Petit's auction in Paris, 9th June, 1913, when the Steengracht collec-tion was put up for sale, or whether he acquired it through a middleman is difficult to settle now.
