The author points out The Prince's position as a leader in matters of culture, a leader, whose innate authorilativeness was coupled with the most sensitive consideration for others. He was conscious of his excellent capacity for discrimination but also of his limitations. His position in the Swedish world of culture can be described as that of a constitutional Prince of culture. As an artist he made his own choice, favouring monumental art in which he developed a personal style of considerable material firmness combined 0077ith spiritual and dramatic expression. As early as about 1900 he painted his two landscapes in one of Stockholm's High Schools, Norra Latin. He decorated two of the walls himself and was maecenas for Bruno Liljefors' work on a third wall, while Carl Larsson painted a fourth. The author suggests that the successfully begun murals in the school's two cortiles surrounded by columns and with overhead lighting, should be completed as he con-siders this would be a fitting tribute to the memory of the beloved artist and patron of arts. |
