Inhoud: Richard Bergh (1858-1919) is one of the most interesting figures in the history of Scandinavian art at the turn of the century. His versatility as a painter and author, his engagement in cultural politics and, later, his position as head of the National Museum gave him great influence among his contemporaries. The motif permitting, Richard Bergh endeavoured to combine artistic ideas with social engagement in his pictures. This can be seen in, for example, the project for a painting he called “The City”, 1903-1909. His aim was to fuse impressions from different occasions into a whole, to render visible the concept that he had within him of what a city really is. He saw it as a contrapuntal arrangement of rhythm and social disharmonies. The different dissonant elements of his theme were the worker, the child, the whore and the waterfront. The monumental treatment given in the sketches to the worker in the late evening light lend the motif political and social tension. However, the transformation of Stockholm to a modern city that was then taking place meant that Bergh was to witness the disappearance of part of his motif. The demands he made on artistic renewal, and on himself, together with a troublesome eye complaint had a paralyzing effect on his work. If he had succeeded in co-ordinating all his various aims into a harmonic composition, “The City” would probably have been a unique painting in which the artist had combined' the social dissonances of the city with the rhythm of the street.
