Gibbs formulated a fairly general theory of equilibrium for solids in contact with fluids. As a special case, he included nonlinear thermoelasticity theory, in particular a theory of thermoelastic phase transitions. For such phenomena, thermodynamicists use a theory which seems somewhat different but in fact is quite similar. We seek to clarify the factors involved in phase transitions from the viewpoint of Gibbs' theory. |
