Expressions for the state of stress associated with an ellipsoidal cavity in an infinite elastic medium are derived for the case of uniform temperature on the cavity surface. Specialization of the general stress solutions to determine the stress intensity factors for elliptic cracks is accomplished by collapsing the cavity to the case of a very flat ellipsoidal cavity (c ↦0 )Of Numerical results revealing the ellipsoidal-cavity thermal-stress concentrations and profiles are presented. |
