  Foliar diagnostic norms for potatoes

Titel: Foliar diagnostic norms for potatoes
Auteur: Meldal-Johnsen, A.
Sumner, M. E.
Verschenen in: Journal of plant nutrition
Paginering: Jaargang 2 (1980) nr. 5 pagina's 569-576
Jaar: 1980
Inhoud: Beaufils' Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) has been successfully applied to crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans and sugarcane-as a foliar diagnostic tool capable of revealing mineral imbalances. As a result it is logical that norms for other crops should be established and this paper presents and tests DRIS norms for N, P and K in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) leaves. The norms are developed from 745 sets of data for elemental leaf composition and corresponding tuber yield. This is achieved by dividing the total population into two sub-populations (high and low) on the basis of yield. The norms are calculated from those forms of expressing the leaf composition which significantly discriminate between the two sub-populations. The degree of nutrient imbalance in the plant is expressed in terms of DRIS indices which measure the extent to which the nutrients deviate from the established norm. These norms enable one to diagnose whether N, P or K is the nutrient most limiting potato production in a particular case to be diagnosed. The advantage of the DRIS approach over the critical value or sufficiency range approaches in making a diagnosis, is illustrated.
