Bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Improved Tendergreen) when grown in a nutrient solution with no added Ca had dead terminal growing points and a greatly enlarged stem diameter. Mineral composition of the stems relative to that of control plants showed increases of 9.6, 3.2, 2.0, 24.0, 3.2, 14.8, 1.6, 3.6, 3.5, 32.0, 2.9, 12.8, and 12.0 times respectively for Na, K, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, B, Al, Si, Mo, Sr, Ba and Pb. Simultaneously the Ca concentration of the stems was decreased 30.5 times.
