The composition of thylakoids and photosystem II membrane preparations obtained from iron deficient sugar beet leaves was different from that of membrane preparations obtained from control plants. Spectroscopic and photosynthetic pigment analysis indicated that the relative amount of some carotenoids, thought to be part of the photosystem II antenna, was larger in membrane preparations from iron deficient plants than in preparations from iron sufficient plants. However, the pigment composition of thylakoids and photosystem II membrane preparations from iron deficient sugar beet leaves depended on the starting material, very chlorotic leaves resulting in large enrichments in carotenoids. Results emphasize the need for a better characterization of the photosynthetic membrane fractions obtained from Fe-deficient plants. |
