Contrary to a prevailing view that the coercive power of the colonial state facilitated planter control of labour and the introduction of wage-labour relations in the sugar haciendas of Negros Island in the late nineteenth century, this article presents new evidence to argue that sharecropping was the predominant mechanism for the generation and extraction of surplus and that the supposed planter-state alliance was non-existent during this period. Sugarcane tenancy was the specific outcome of incomplete planter class hegemony. The article also argues that planter strategies and labour processes entailed oppositional relationships that revolved around the dual axes of colonialism and capitalism, and that political economy and culture were dialectically intertwined in those relationships. The complex set of events that transpired in the early twentieth century under the aegis of American colonialism eventuated in the transition to the wage-labour form, in its deproletarianised variant, in Negros. However, from the outset, hacienda production relations were embedded in capitalist contradictions, but their changing morphology was contingent upon the interplay of multiple determinations. |
