It is suggested that composers would benefit from more knowledge of Cognitive Psychology and examples are drawn from Paivio's Dual Coding Theory and Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory. The serial nature of conventional music is described as a set of moves through an ndimensional space using incremental rules that take into account the above theories. Techniques borrowed from Artificial Intelligence are use to illustrate ways of moving through the space. |
