Auteur: Adams, Daniel
Verschenen in: Journal of new music research
Paginering: Jaargang 21 (1992) nr. 2 pagina's 117-134
Jaar: 1992
Inhoud: Advances in performance techniques and notational procedures have enabled Twentieth Century composers to write music that utilizes the timbral contrasts inherent in an assembly of diverse percussion instruments. This analytical survey addresses the importance of the interrelationship between striking implement and surface area specifications as compositional aspects of unaccompanied multiple percussion solos. Striking implements are defined as objects used to activate percussion instruments and include items such as sticks, brushes, and mallets. A surface area is the portion of the instrument with which the striking implement makes contact. These criteria are essential to the timbral analysis of any multiple percussion solo and are particularly relevant to those of indefinite or limited pitch. The analytical procedures can be flexibly applied to compositions of contrasting style, notation, and instrumentation and a brief discussion of applicable acoustical matters is included. Examples from seven musical compositions are cited.
