On the spectral analysis of melody

Title: On the spectral analysis of melody
Author: Nettheim, Nigel
Appeared in: Journal of new music research
Paging: Volume 21 (1992) nr. 2 pages 135-148
Year: 1992
Contents: The widely-known claim of Voss and Clarke (1978) that much music is well modelled by “1/ƒ noise” is critically examined. Some new data are provided for classical music, yielding mainly negative conclusions. In the course of the investigation some of the problems of the statistical analysis of musical data are discussed.
