Experiences with serial and electronic music have to a growing extent encouraged the author to plan compositions in advance and to formulate the appropriate strategies, instead of writing them down spontaneously. Such strategies eventually assumed the form of computer programs which, while not replacing the composer, do determine what he actually writes down. He also discovered that strategies formulated as algorithms reveal - often unexpectedly - a vista of unexplored formal contexts: aesthetic landscapes where, accompanied by the computer, the composer roams. |
