In the United States trustees play important roles in the affairs of higher education institutions. The role of trusteeship demands personal sacrifice and commitment. But trusteeship is voluntary with no direct material reward. Satisfactory performance of trusteeship, therefore, hinges upon individual motivation and persuasion. In other words, trustees would perform to the extent that they are satisfied with their functions. Consequently, improving trustee performance would entail better understanding of factors associated with their satisfaction. This study, which is part of a larger study, focuses on trustees' level of satisfaction and explores perceived strategies for improving their satisfaction. Responses obtained from almost 500 trustees indicated sectoral differences on a number of items presented to the participants. A few gender differences in satisfaction were observed and no difference in satisfaction was found by differences in educational levels. Also, sectoral and gender differences were observed for recommended strategies for improving trustee satisfaction. The study concluded that the traditional approach for studying job satisfaction may not be suitable for role satisfaction, especially roles that are voluntarily performed.
