Inhoud: One of the major tasks confronting administrators in tertiary education institutions is the effective and equitable deployment of personnel to meet expanding work commitments in a time of contracting resources and extensive restructuring. This paper describes a policy and a computer-based system for the equitable and flexible allocation of teaching loads for academic staff in an integrated faculty of education, ie. one with no departments. A central feature of the approach is the reconciliation of work bads based upon a combination of two different number sets. The first includes numbers that are artefacts of course design and enrolments, with the second set includes numbers relating to administration, research and development that have been negotiated within the Faculty. The policy and staffing system were evolved following amalgamation of a small university department of education with a large College of Advanced Education school of education. The changing circumstances are described to indicate the range of issues confronting faculty administrators and to elucidate the rationale for the staffing policy and system. Attention is drawn to the benefits of managing the policy through the use of a data base software package and to the range of enrolment, subject, courses design and staffing work load statistical information that may be extracted readily. These data are invaluable in guiding faculty planning and administration.
