This paper focuses on some features of Norwegian forensic psychiatry. It presents an overview of the system and recent developments. Over the past 15 years Norwegian psychiatry has undergone a decentralization of services, and the build-up of regional and county council secure units has taken place. A number of health policy decisions have also improved the psychiatric health care offered to prisoners. The organization of inpatient care is then described, focusing on the environment, level of staffing and patient characteristics. Emphasis is also placed on interdisciplinary communication and the problems of discharge and transfer of forensic psychiatric patients to general services. The discussion highlights areas of success and issues of continuing concern. Similarities between the developments seen in Norway and in England and Wales are also noted. |
