Violence is one of the most important causes of death of young males in the urban areas of industrial countries, but the aetiological background underlying this violent behaviour has not been studied with epidemiological methods using large or comprehensive samples. The traditional false positive-false negative approach has been of little benefit for forensic psychiatry and clinical decision-making. This article deals with a new quantitative method for use in the prediction of serious aggressive behaviour. It presents calculation of the odds ratios for homicidal behaviour among a large number of different subpopulations using an epidemiological approach. The study presents a systematic comparison on the quantitative risk increase associated with different kinds of risk factors. Quantitative risk assessment of violent behaviour using an epidemiological approach and large samples is essential when important different issues, such as genetics, childhood circumstances and sociological variables, are studied as the aetiological factors of violence. This kind of method can be used to focus the limited resources of violence prevention on defined high-risk populations. |
