Every year a small number of people below the age of 17 receive a 'life' sentence for murder and spend the rest of their adolescence and young adulthood in custody. These young people have complex needs and their sentences provide an opportunity for engagement in longer-term work. This paper presents the progress of a year-long psychodynamic psychotherapy treatment with a 14-year-old boy convicted of murder. The initial psychological assessment and background history are presented along with a description of the index offence. The engagement process and progress within psychotherapy are described with an emphasis on themes of shame and remorse. A psychodynamic formulation is presented. Finally, a brief comment on outcome is included. |
