  Anger and its management

Title: Anger and its management
Author: Levey, Susan
Howells, Kevin
Appeared in: The journal of forensic psychiatry & psychology
Paging: Volume 1 (1990) nr. 3 pages 305-327
Year: 1990-12-01
Contents: Aggressive behaviour in forensic patients has been the subject of a limited amount of research. Studies of aggressive behaviour in psychiatric patients tend to explain such behaviour predominantly in terms of the symptomology of mental disorder, although environmental factors and the interactions between staff and patients have also received some attention. In this paper we argue that much of the aggression which occurs in inpatient settings (both forensic and psychiatric) is anger-mediated. Various forms of anger management are discussed, including interventions which take the individual/group as the focus of attention, and those which are directed at the institution. Finally, suggestions are made to assist the clinician in determining the appropriate intervention for a given individual.
