The colonial phase of the expansion process of the global market did not merely create the conditions for ambivalent identification of the colonised with the colonisers, but also for the differentiation of central versus semi-peripheral colonisers. In this article, we will attempt to show that the latter influenced the identity strategies developed by 'middleman ethnic minorities' of Indian origin settled in the British colonies of East Africa and in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique. They continue to serve as a source of identity arguments in the post-colonial management of power dynamics. This argument will be developed on the basis of the fieldwork carried out in an area of Greater London with a high concentration of Gujarati Hindus. |
