Inhoud: In this assessment of arsenic as a Priority Substance under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, available data were critically evaluated to determine if levels of arsenic present in the Canadian environment pose a risk to health. Average daily intakes of inorganic arsenic from drinking water, food, air and soil have been estimated for the general population, as well as for populations residing in the vicinity of point sources. Based on the sufficient weight of evidence in adequate epidemiological studies in several countries in which exposure to arsenic compounds via inhalation or ingestion has been associated with cancer, arsenic has been classified as “carcinogenic in humans”. Based on comparison of estimates of exposure in Canada to the estimated potency of inhaled and ingested arsenic to induce cancer, the priority for analysis of options to reduce exposure in the general environment is considered to be moderate to high compared to that of other substances assessed under CEPA.
